In my opinion, House of Soto serves
authentic Indonesian food, unlike the other supposedly Indonesian
restaurants in Singapore. It's a good place to indulge your cravings for
a home-cooked meal without having to deal with the crowds and the queues
at open-air hawker centres.
Their rawon and sotos are packed with noodles and meat, which definitely
makes the trip to the East Coast worthwhile. Their rice and soup sets
cost around SGD 6.00 each, while the noodles and fried rice are about
SGD 4.50. And instead of ordering Coke or Sprite, why not try their
homemade drinks like iced timun and iced soda lychee - a tall refreshing
glass costs about SGD 2.00. Unfortunately, probably the only Indonesian
dish that they don't serve here is the ayam penyet. But then again,
we're not complaining.
My only complaint with House of Soto is their complimentary dessert,
which was served to us the first time we ate there. It was some kind of
chewy fruit dish doused with coconut milk. If you're not fond of it, you
can simply ask the waitress not to serve it at your table. But if you're
lucky enough (like me and my friends), the last time we went there, they
served us fried bananas smothered in delicious chocolate sauce. Since my
friends and I go bananas over bananas, we started whooping and cheering.
Even the wait staff found our reactions funny - so funny, that they gave
us enough servings for everyone at the table. Now that's good service!
